Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Observes National Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month.

As part of National Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is committed to supporting families and caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Recognizing the profound impact these conditions have on patients and their families, we offer a range of specialized hospice services designed to provide comfort, support, and expert care.

How Our Hospice Teams Can Help:

  1. Comprehensive Medical Care: Our interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, and therapists, offers personalized care plans to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
  2. Emotional and Spiritual Support: We provide counseling and spiritual care tailored to the needs of both patients and their families, helping them navigate the emotional complexities of the disease.
  3. Pain and Symptom Management: Our focus is on alleviating pain and other distressing symptoms, ensuring patients remain as comfortable as possible. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition, and patients can benefit from the prolonged support hospice services provide.
  4. Respite Care: Recognizing the toll caregiving can take, we offer respite care services, allowing primary caregivers to take necessary breaks while knowing their loved ones are in safe, expert hands.
  5. Support for Caregivers: The Alzheimer’s Association notes that caregivers often experience high levels of stress and that hospice services can help alleviate some of this burden and prevent burnout. To further support those caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, we host free Caregiver Support Groups on the first Wednesday of every month. These groups provide a space for sharing experiences, gaining advice, and finding mutual support.
  6. Volunteer Assistance: Our dedicated volunteers are available to assist with various needs, providing companionship to patients and giving caregivers much-needed respite.

Importance of Early Hospice Involvement

Engaging hospice care early in the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia can significantly enhance the quality of life for patients and ease the burden on families. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care tend to have fewer emergency room visits and hospital admissions compared to those who do not receive hospice care.

The Rewards of Being a Hospice Volunteer

While I was familiar with Hospice for many years, I only have been a hospice volunteer with Pemi Baker Hospice and Home Health (PBHHH) since October 2021.  When I retired, I began searching for volunteer work that would allow me to give back to my community.  A newsletter from PBHHH arrived in my email announcing training for hospice volunteers.  My family had experienced the need for hospice twice, once in Ohio and again in Florida.  The relief my family and I felt when the hospice volunteers arrived was beyond measure.  I want to bring the same kind of assistance to others.  PBHHH given me that opportunity by providing professional training with knowledgeable nurses, doctors, social workers and other health care professionals.  Their guidance has enabled me to meet the challenges of being s hospice volunteer, and I am very glad that I did it.
