October is also Liver Awareness Month, and it’s crucial to raise awareness about how palliative & hospice care can help those with liver conditions such as hepatitis, liver cancer, or cirrhosis (from any cause). Liver disease can cause a wide range of symptoms, from pain and nausea to fatigue (feeling weak or tired), jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), and lack of appetite, amongst others.

At Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, we understand the unique needs of individuals living with liver disease. It can be physically and emotionally challenging, but the Pemi-Baker team will offer round-the-clock support to manage symptoms, relieve discomfort, and improve quality of life for patients and their families.

How Can Palliative & Hospice Care Help? 

  • Symptom management: Liver disease can cause pain, swelling, nausea, and difficulty eating. The Pemi-Baker team will help manage these symptoms with medications and other therapies, so you can be more comfortable.
  • Emotional support: Living with liver disease can be overwhelming and stressful. The Pemi-Baker team will work with you and your family to offer emotional and psychological support. This might include talking through fears or concerns or connecting you with counseling services.
  • Coordination of care: You’ll likely have many doctors involved in your care, such as liver specialists (hepatologists), surgeons, and primary care doctors. The Pemi-Baker team will help coordinate your treatment, ensuring everyone works together to meet your needs.
  • Help with decisions: There are often complicated decisions to be made about your care. The Pemi-Baker team will explain your options, answer your questions, and help you make decisions that align with your goals and values.

To qualify for hospice care patients, families and providers can refer to the program if the patient’s condition is life limiting and the patient is seeking symptom management support at home or in a nursing home/hospital.

While I was familiar with Hospice for many years, I only have been a hospice volunteer with Pemi Baker Hospice and Home Health (PBHHH) since October 2021.  When I retired, I began searching for volunteer work that would allow me to give back to my community.  A newsletter from PBHHH arrived in my email announcing training for hospice volunteers.  My family had experienced the need for hospice twice, once in Ohio and again in Florida.  The relief my family and I felt when the hospice volunteers arrived was beyond measure.  I want to bring the same kind of assistance to others.  PBHHH given me that opportunity by providing professional training with knowledgeable nurses, doctors, social workers and other health care professionals.  Their guidance has enabled me to meet the challenges of being s hospice volunteer, and I am very glad that I did it.
