Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Announces Upcoming ‘Grief & Loss Support Group’ Series Starting September 23rd, 2025.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is pleased to announce the next offering of its Grief & Loss Support Group, beginning Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025, at the Plymouth Senior Center. The focus for the group will be “The Presence of an Absence.” Free Grief & Loss Support groups offered at Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, Plymouth, NH

In whatever losses we experience in our lives, someone or something that has been there for us is no longer present and available. Our grief and mourning is initially directed to feeling the absence of that presence. Oddly enough, growing through the sadness and sorrow brought on by our loss, includes recognizing that absence is a genuine reality in itself that invites our attention.

Some specialists in grief studies speak of welcoming as friends or guests the range of emotions and feelings that came into our lives with the loss. Others suggest embracing and learning to love these feelings. This is certainly a challenge that we might not want to even consider. It might be compared to looking into a black hole in the universe or the rabbit hole Alice fell down into Wonderland.

We will think about such things as emptiness, numbness, and feeling disconnected. The exploration, however, might carry us along another step in coming to terms with a different realm of reality as we process our experiences of grieving and mourning. It will not erase our loss or remove our grief, but we may continue to discover companions along the way who are enduring similar responses.

The group will meet weekly on Tuesdays: September 23rd, 30th, October 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 noon. Sessions will be held in the upstairs art room of the Plymouth Regional Senior Center (8 Depot Street, Plymouth), accessible by elevator. Participants needing a parking slip should plan to arrive by 10:15 AM to obtain one at the front desk.

Each session is structured around open dialogue rather than a rigid syllabus. While broad topics guide the group, the true value comes from the shared experiences and honest conversations among participants. Handouts may be provided to spark reflection, but the focus is on personal connection and support.

This group is inclusive of many kinds of loss—not just the death of a loved one. Whether you’re dealing with the end of a relationship, the loss of a pet, job, home, or other life changes, this space is for you.

“We recognize that grief is deeply personal, and we strive to provide a welcoming environment where all forms of loss are respected and validated,” said Tillson.

Next Volunteer Training Program – Beginning September 10th

Join Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health’s Next Volunteer Training Program – Beginning September 10th.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is inviting community members to take part in its next free volunteer training program, beginning Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Sessions will be held weekly on Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Pemi-Baker offices, 101 Boulder Drive in Plymouth. The five-week training will wrap up on October 15, 2025, with a pause on October 1.

This program is more than a class—it’s an opportunity to touch lives in powerful and meaningful ways. Volunteers at Pemi-Baker are companions, listeners, and supporters for patients and families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments. From offering a warm presence at the bedside, to helping with errands, to lending a hand with office projects or community events, every volunteer makes a difference.

“Volunteers are the heart of our organization,” says Angie Burke, Volunteer Coordinator. “Their kindness and generosity bring comfort not only to our patients but also to the families who love them. Joining this training means joining a family of caregivers who believe in showing up with compassion.”

Pemi-Baker is especially welcoming male volunteers and those with military service. These volunteers often bring shared experiences that create special connections—particularly with Veteran patients.

No medical background is required—just a caring spirit and a willingness to give a little time. By the end of the program, participants will feel confident and prepared to provide both emotional and practical support, ensuring that patients and families never feel alone.

Special Community Presentation on Alzheimer’s, Dementia & Hospice

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Announces Special Community Presentation on Alzheimer’s, Dementia & Hospice Care.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Plymouth Regional Senior Center, is hosting a free, in-person community presentation on Alzheimer’s, Dementia & Hospice Care on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center, 8 Depot Street, Plymouth, NH.

This special program will provide attendees with essential information about Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, the importance of early detection, and the wide range of resources available through the Alzheimer’s Association. The presentation will also cover hospice care services offered by Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, helping families understand when and how to access these vital supports.

The session will be led by two distinguished presenters:

  • Melissa Grenier, Regional Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association, will share expertise on the signs and stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia, how to seek a diagnosis, and the benefits of early planning.
  • Kristi Saunders, MD, Hospice Medical Director for Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, will explain how hospice care can provide comfort, dignity, and quality of life for individuals with dementia and their families.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting millions of individuals and families nationwide. With no known cure, early awareness and access to resources are critical for both patients and caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a wealth of programs, support groups, and educational materials to help families navigate the challenges of dementia.

National Write Your Will Month: Complete your Advance Directives

In recognition of National Write Your Will Month this August, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is urging community members to take this important opportunity to complete their ‘living will’ or Advance Directive. To assist the community in this vital task, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health will be hosting a series of free workshops at local senior centers in collaboration with the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council. These workshops, scheduled for August are designed to guide attendees through the process of filling out their Advance Directive forms, providing the necessary support and information to ensure that their healthcare preferences are clearly documented.

Liz Testa, LICSW, Medical Social Worker at Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, emphasized the importance of these preparations. “An Advance Directive is more than just a form; it’s a way to ensure that your healthcare wishes are respected, even when you may not be able to voice them yourself. By planning ahead, you can relieve your loved ones of the burden of making tough decisions during stressful times. Welcome Elizabeth Testa, LICSW and Gretchen Smith, RN

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health proudly announces two new additions to its growing team, strengthening its mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to patients and families throughout the region.

Elizabeth (Liz) Testa, LICSW, has joined the organization full-time as a medical social worker for both home care and hospice patients. Liz brings over two decades of experience working with diverse patient populations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Her wide-ranging background includes supporting teenagers in dropout prevention programs, providing care in intensive care units, telemetry, emergency rooms, the VA system, nursing homes, and home hospice care.

“Throughout my career, I’ve done a little bit of everything,” said Liz. “But I fell in love with hospice from day one. I’m honored to support families at one of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. I believe deeply in walking alongside patients and families on this emotional, often unpredictable journey.”

Prior to Pemi-Baker, Liz served at Tufts Care at Home in Lowell, MA, where she was the sole social worker covering a large territory across southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. After spending hours on the road every day, Liz sought a change—one that brought her closer to home and back to the community roots she values.

“I’d heard great things about Pemi-Baker as a community-based agency,” she added. “I hope my 20-plus years of experience can support patients, families, and my colleagues as we continue to look for ways to improve care and make things easier for the people we serve.”

Liz is guided by the words of Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Joining Liz is Gretchen Smith, RN, who steps in as Pemi-Baker’s new Clinical Manager. Gretchen comes to the role with a decade of nursing experience, primarily in long-term care, and a lifelong dedication to guiding and supporting others.

“Nursing is actually my second career,” Gretchen shared. “Before this, I trained horses and taught riding for over 20 years. The skill sets overlap more than people might think—patience, trust, clear communication. Interestingly, several of my riding students became nurses, too.”

Gretchen describes her leadership style as “supportive guidance” and finds inspiration in the African philosophy of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.” She is relocating to the area and sees herself as a modern-day version of the nurses in Call the Midwife—providing care with warmth and compassion in people’s homes.

“As our communities age, more people will choose to stay at home surrounded by what’s familiar,” said Gretchen. “My guiding principle is simple: the ‘grandma test.’ Is the care I’m providing good enough for my own grandmother? If the answer is yes, I know I’m doing right by my patients.”

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is excited to welcome Liz and Gretchen and looks forward to the dedication and heart they bring to patients, families, and the entire community.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Shines a Light on Men’s Health and Aging in Place During National Men’s Health Month.

June is National Men’s Health Month, and Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is spotlighting the importance of healthy aging for senior men. As we age, maintaining strength and independence becomes critical to living well at home. One often overlooked but vital issue is Sarcopenia—the gradual loss of muscle mass that can occur with age or illness.

Sarcopenia affects nearly one in three adults over 60 and can significantly impact balance, mobility, and the ability to live independently. Without intervention, it increases the risk of falls, fractures, and a general decline in health and quality of life. For men hoping to age in place safely, addressing sarcopenia is essential.

What is Sarcopenia?
Sarcopenia is an age-related condition that leads to the progressive weakening and shrinking of muscles. It typically begins around age 50 and accelerates with inactivity, poor nutrition, and chronic illness. Symptoms include reduced strength, slower walking speed, and difficulty with everyday tasks like climbing stairs or rising from a chair.

What Can Men Do About It?
The good news: sarcopenia is not inevitable. Lifestyle changes can slow, stop, or even reverse muscle loss.

The Rewards of Being a Hospice Volunteer

While I was familiar with Hospice for many years, I only have been a hospice volunteer with Pemi Baker Hospice and Home Health (PBHHH) since October 2021.  When I retired, I began searching for volunteer work that would allow me to give back to my community.  A newsletter from PBHHH arrived in my email announcing training for hospice volunteers.  My family had experienced the need for hospice twice, once in Ohio and again in Florida.  The relief my family and I felt when the hospice volunteers arrived was beyond measure.  I want to bring the same kind of assistance to others.  PBHHH given me that opportunity by providing professional training with knowledgeable nurses, doctors, social workers and other health care professionals.  Their guidance has enabled me to meet the challenges of being s hospice volunteer, and I am very glad that I did it.
