Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Shines a Light on Men’s Health and Aging in Place During National Men’s Health Month.
June is National Men’s Health Month, and Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is spotlighting the importance of healthy aging for senior men. As we age, maintaining strength and independence becomes critical to living well at home. One often overlooked but vital issue is Sarcopenia—the gradual loss of muscle mass that can occur with age or illness.
Sarcopenia affects nearly one in three adults over 60 and can significantly impact balance, mobility, and the ability to live independently. Without intervention, it increases the risk of falls, fractures, and a general decline in health and quality of life. For men hoping to age in place safely, addressing sarcopenia is essential.
What is Sarcopenia?
Sarcopenia is an age-related condition that leads to the progressive weakening and shrinking of muscles. It typically begins around age 50 and accelerates with inactivity, poor nutrition, and chronic illness. Symptoms include reduced strength, slower walking speed, and difficulty with everyday tasks like climbing stairs or rising from a chair.
What Can Men Do About It?
The good news: sarcopenia is not inevitable. Lifestyle changes can slow, stop, or even reverse muscle loss.
Here are some key strategies men can start at home today:
- Strength Training: Simple resistance exercises—such as squats using a chair, wall push-ups, and lifting light hand weights—can rebuild muscle. Aim for two to three sessions per week.
- Protein-Rich Diet: Consuming enough protein is essential. Incorporate lean meats, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts into meals and snacks.
- Vitamin D: Seniors should get enough sunlight or consider supplements to maintain healthy muscles and bones.
- Stay Active Daily: Walking, stretching, and gentle yoga can maintain mobility and prevent stiffness.
Pemi-Baker offers support for men and families navigating aging in place. Our physical and occupational therapy services, wellness programs, and at-home health assessments ensure that older adults stay strong, safe, and independent for as long as possible.
“This month, we encourage all men—especially those over 60—to take action,” said Ernest Roy, DPT, Quality Director. “Debilitating muscle loss does not have to be part of getting older. It’s a challenge we can fight—and win—with the right tools.”
